ChatGPT can't join WhatsApp groups: what works instead

ChatGPT can't join a WhatsApp group because it is no longer on WhatsApp at all: OpenAI says ChatGPT is not available on WhatsApp after 15 January 2026, because of a policy and terms change from WhatsApp. What works instead is Meta AI, which is built into WhatsApp in some countries, or Cole, the AI assistant from Pocodot that you add to the group by its phone number. Moving the group into the ChatGPT app is no longer an option either: since 9 July 2026, OpenAI says nobody can create or join a new group chat in ChatGPT.

Why there is no ChatGPT to add

People used to message ChatGPT on WhatsApp through the 1-800-ChatGPT contact. In October 2025 OpenAI announced that ChatGPT would no longer be available on WhatsApp after 15 January 2026, and asked people to link their WhatsApp chats to a ChatGPT account before then. We found no OpenAI page saying ChatGPT came back to WhatsApp.

The background, and the full list of assistants that still work in a private WhatsApp chat, is in ChatGPT alternatives for WhatsApp in 2026 and Can you add ChatGPT to a WhatsApp group?. This guide is about the group itself: what each option that works instead can see there, when it answers and who pays for it.

What each option sees in your group

OptionHow it gets inWhat it can readWhen it answersWho pays
Meta AI, mentionedA member mentions @Meta AI in a message, where Meta offers it.Meta says it can only read messages that mention @Meta AI or that people choose to share with it.When someone mentions it.Free for everyday use, Meta says.
Meta AI as a memberA member adds Meta AI to the group. Everyone sees a system message and a welcome message from Meta AI.New messages sent after it was added.Meta says it responds only when it can add value to the conversation or when a member chooses to interact with it.Free for everyday use, Meta says.
ChatGPT group chatNot in WhatsApp, and being retired: since 9 July 2026, OpenAI says you can no longer create or join a new group chat in ChatGPT.Only what was written in that ChatGPT group chat.Existing group chats are read-only in the UK; elsewhere, members can keep sending while messaging is enabled, OpenAI says. Not applicable to new groups.
ColeYou add Cole's WhatsApp number to the group as a participant. It cannot join from an invite link.Once the group has a payer, the group's messages sent after Cole joined, kept as background. When someone tags it, calls it by name or replies to one of its messages. One member who said yes in a private chat; until then, each person with a Pocodot account pays for their own questions.

The difference that matters most in a busy group is what each one can read. An assistant that only reads the messages that mention it cannot answer "what did we agree on Saturday?" unless someone pastes the messages in. An assistant that reads the group's new messages can, and everyone in the group should know that it does.

Pick by what your group needs
    • A quick answer now and then, in a country where WhatsApp offers Meta AI
      Meta AI
    • Reminders posted in the WhatsApp group at the time you set, once or on a daily or weekly schedule

    • Recaps of what the group said, and help with your own email and calendar from your private chat

Group chats in the ChatGPT app are being retired

Moving the group into the ChatGPT app used to be an option. For a new group, it no longer is. OpenAI's Help Center says:

    • Since 9 July 2026, you can no longer create a group chat, turn a conversation into one, or join one through an invite link.
    • In the UK, existing group chats are read-only. Elsewhere, people already in an existing group chat can keep sending messages while messaging there is still enabled. Their history stays available.

Your WhatsApp group's messages were never in a ChatGPT group chat in any case: they stay in WhatsApp.

A WhatsApp number that calls itself ChatGPT

OpenAI says ChatGPT is not available on WhatsApp after 15 January 2026, and we found no OpenAI page saying it came back. A WhatsApp contact offering "ChatGPT" for your group is not a service OpenAI says it runs. Check who runs it before you add it to a group or share anything private with it.

Add Cole to your WhatsApp group

    01
    Sign up and connect WhatsApp
Create a free Pocodot account and choose WhatsApp. The dashboard opens WhatsApp with a one-time code already typed; send it to Cole and Cole replies in your private chat.
    02
Add Cole's number to the group
Save the number you just messaged as a contact, open the group and add Cole as a participant, the way you add anyone. If only admins can add members, ask a group admin.
    03
Tag Cole once from your number
Send @Cole hi in the group from the WhatsApp number on your account. Cole answers from your own credits, then asks you once, in your private chat, whether your account should pay for everyone in the group. Say yes, and everyone in the group can ask Cole. Nobody becomes the payer without saying yes.

Then ask in plain words: "Cole, what did we decide about Saturday?", "Cole, remind everyone on Friday at 6pm to bring the deposit". Cole answers each person in the language they write in. Honest limits

    • Cole is not ChatGPT, and it cannot bring over your ChatGPT conversations.
    • Cole sees only messages sent after it joined the group, and someone who joins later is answered from what was said after they joined.
    • A WhatsApp group Cole has newly joined can try Cole once for free: someone without an account may get one short answer to a text question, with a line on how to link an account. Requests that need tools, files or live data need an account. Apart from that one answer, every answer uses Pocodot credits.
    • Meta AI and some of its features are available only in some countries; check WhatsApp's page for yours.

We make Cole. For every other product we used only its own pages, listed under Sources, and we say so where we found nothing.

    About Cole
Pocodot makes Cole, an AI assistant you add to WhatsApp, iMessage, Telegram, LINE and Slack, including group chats. Cole handles reminders, email, calendar, research and calls, in private chats and group chats.

    Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT join a WhatsApp group?
No. OpenAI says ChatGPT is no longer available on WhatsApp after 15 January 2026, because of a policy and terms change from WhatsApp, so there is no ChatGPT number to add to a group. You can use Meta AI where WhatsApp offers it, or add Cole to the group by its phone number.
Can I add Meta AI to my WhatsApp group instead?
Where Meta offers it, yes. A member can add Meta AI to the group; it can then read and respond to new messages sent after it was added, and group admins can remove it at any time. You can also mention @Meta AI in a message; Meta says it can only read messages that mention @Meta AI or that people choose to share with it.
What can an AI in a WhatsApp group see?
It depends on the assistant. Meta AI added as a member reads new messages sent after it was added. Meta AI that is only mentioned reads the messages that mention it or that people share with it. Cole, once the group has a payer, keeps the group's messages sent after it joined as background and replies only when someone tags it, calls it by name or replies to it.
Can we use a ChatGPT group chat instead of WhatsApp?
Not a new one. OpenAI's Help Center says that since 9 July 2026 nobody can create a new group chat in ChatGPT or join one. In the UK, existing group chats are read-only; elsewhere, people already in one can keep sending messages while messaging there is still enabled. To keep an AI in the WhatsApp group, use Meta AI where WhatsApp offers it, or add Cole to the WhatsApp group.
Is a WhatsApp contact called ChatGPT the real one?
OpenAI says ChatGPT is not available on WhatsApp after 15 January 2026, and we found no OpenAI page saying it came back. A WhatsApp contact offering "ChatGPT" is not a service OpenAI says it runs, so check who runs it before you add it to a group.
How much does Cole cost in a WhatsApp group?
Cole is free to start with 150 one-time credits, and paid plans start at $19 a month for 2,000 credits. In a group, the account that agreed to pay for the group pays for Cole's replies.
